Readings. Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
The prodigal son, another name is
the wasteful son, irresponsible son. This is a man who is willing to
waste all of his wealth, assets, stocks, land, accounts of which he
inherited but never earned any of it himself. All he is interested
in is having a good indulging life. He completely disregards his
familial responsibilities, not even protecting his wife or his children's
inheritance. He is as selfish as self becomes. We would all be
disappointed if any of our children dealt with our life-long hard labor in
this way. Luckily for this prodigal man, he could return to his
homestead and have a second chance, because his father never gave him the
complete inheritance. Many times we too have a second chance at
life. Our Western civilization allows us to make one serious mistake
in order that we will not make it the second time. The prodigal son
did not repeat his mistake.
